The 6 Best Hot Air Brushes of 2023, Tested and Reviewed (2023)

The 6 Best Hot Air Brushes of 2023, Tested and Reviewed (1)

It’s no secret that achieving a sleek blowout at home using a hair dryer and a round brush can be challenging—it requires coordination, arm strength, and skill. Enter hot air brushes, which act as part blow dryer, part curling iron, and part straightener, allowing you to both dry your hair and create smoothness, bend, or movement in one fell swoop.

“The best part of a hot air brush is that it cuts down on styling time,” says Zoya Ghamari, hairstylist and owner of Zoya Salon in Dallas. “It also helps you dry and style your hair at the same time.” Alex Brown, a Chicago-based celebrity hairstylist, adds that hot air brushes can help pump up the volume and give you the look of a round brush blow-dry without having to use multiple tools. We know it sounds like a dream, but with so many options now available on the market, how do you pick the right one?

Well, we did all the hard work for you by conducting two comprehensive tests—one in our lab facility in Manhattan with testers and professional hairstylists and one in the real world where our testers each took home one tool to try out in their daily lives. We evaluated each tool based on how well it dried the hair, how it made the hair look, how easy it was to use, its design features, and its value. And ahead, we’re sharing the hot air brushes that impressed us the most.

Dyson, which is known for its high-tech household appliances, made a big splash in the beauty world when it launched its techy blow-dryer in 2016. Since then, the brand has made beauty waves with its hair straightener and this multi-use styler that can dry, curl, wave, or smooth your hair. This hot air brush is a favorite of Ghamari, who says it's the best in terms of quality and versatility—our editors and testers agree.

The newest version, which was released last year, comes with six different attachments that work to dry, blow out, smooth, or curl the hair. Each attachment glides smoothly through the hair without tugging or causing knots, and a major bonus is that the dryer head has a special flyaway attachment that quite literally works to vanish flyways in one swoop.

This do-it-all tool comes with three different heat settings as well as a cold shot which can be used to set the curls in place if you’re using the wand attachments, and having a variety of heat settings makes it usable for people with all different hair types. There are also three different air pressure settings that allow for further customization. Each and every attachment does what it claims to do, and while it’s extremely expensive compared to other options on the market, we believe that the versatility that this one tool boasts makes it a great investment for anyone that styles their hair at home on a consistent basis. It’s also worth noting that it comes with a two-year warranty—so you can ensure your big purchase is protected.

What We Don't Like

  • Comes with two curling attachments that each turn a different way rather than one that can be flexed

  • Can feel a bit heavy after a few minutes of styling

  • Handle is a bit cumbersome

First came the Dyson Airwrap, then came the FlexStyle from Shark. While they’re comparable, for sure, there are a few differences to note. First, the price difference—we love that this one costs a few hundred dollars less. However, it’s a bit heavier than the AirWrap, and rather than featuring one curling attachment that can curl in both directions, it comes with two that need to be swapped when you want to change the direction of your curl. This isn’t a deal breaker, but it’s not the most convenient.

However, we still absolutely love this tool and highly recommend it. You can purchase a premade set that comes with the attachments that are best for straight or wavy hair, a set that comes with attachments for curly or coily hair, or you can design your own set and choose three attachments on the Shark website. Each attachment works beautifully to dry, smooth, or curl the hair, creating a sleek finish. We love that it features four different heat settings plus a cool shot, as well as three airflow settings. While the body of the tool is fairly large and long, both our at-home testers and professional stylists said it was pretty easy to maneuver and intuitive to use. If you’re looking for a hot air brush that will allow you to create a variety of hairstyles, we absolutely recommend this one.

What We Don't Like

  • Entire tool gets very hot when using the highest heat setting

  • No truly cool setting or cold shot

  • Could be more smoothing

If you’re in the market for an affordable blow-drying brush, this is a great place to start. This updated version of the original tool from Revlon now comes in a more compact design with a slightly smaller brush head for a more defined blowout look. It features four temperature settings as well as four airflow settings, and our professional stylists who participated in our lab test agree that the airflow is smooth and powerful to provide fast drying capabilities. It’s intuitive and easy to use, and we love it for beginners who are simply looking for one tool to quickly style their hair at home.

It’s great for creating a straight hair look with a bit of flip at the ends and volume at the roots, and while people with thicker and less frizzy hair were able to create a sleek, smooth style, we didn’t find this tool to be the best option at eliminating frizz or flyaways on those with frizzy hair. The bristles are pretty far apart, which isn’t ideal for thoroughly combing through and smoothing strands. It’s also important to note that while the hottest setting could be ideal for people with thick hair, it does get extremely hot—so does part of the actual brush handle—so beware of this if you’re prone to damage or you have fine hair. All things considered, we believe it’s a solid option for anyone looking to create a simple blowout at home without investing in an expensive tool.

What We Like

  • Teardrop shape brush head

  • Lightweight and easy to maneuver

  • Creates smooth results

What We Don't Like

  • Airflow could be a bit more powerful

  • Could get a bit hotter

If you’re new to styling your hair on your own, we recommend checking out this hot air brush. People often struggle to get smooth their roots and add volume, which is why we love that this brush has a unique teardrop shape—the round part is perfect for smoothing the lengths and ends, while the narrow end is great for targeting the roots. Aside from the shape, we also appreciate that this tool helps to reduce frizz, is lightweight and easy to use, and has multiple heat settings. It’s easy to hold in your hand thanks to a curved grip with a matte coating, and it’s a great option for those with thin or fine hair because it never feels too hot.

While we were incredibly impressed with the design and performance of this hot air brush, stylists and testers noted that it could be improved by having a stronger airflow. There are three airflow settings, but even the strongest one isn’t the most powerful, especially for people with thick hair. We also wish that it got a bit hotter so it could better smooth coarse or curly hair, but the fact that it doesn’t get extremely hot is nice in the sense that it’s likely not as damaging to the hair as other options.

What We Don't Like

  • Could do a better job at taming frizz

  • Pricey compared to similar options on the market

Giving yourself a blowout at home takes arm strength, but this tool helps to alleviate some of the struggles because it weighs less than one pound. Our testers all mentioned how lightweight it felt when using it, making it a great option for those with limited upper body strength or anyone who will be using the tool for long periods of time. Aside from the lightweight aspect, we love that it comes with three different attachments—a dryer, a round brush dryer, and a paddle brush dryer—to create a variety of results. Both brush attachments glide through the hair seamlessly without tugging or creating knots. The tool features four heat settings, three airflow settings, and a cool shot which are all easy to access via buttons near the bottom. Compared to other options we tested, this one didn’t blow us away in terms of its frizz-taming capabilities, but it does create smooth results with some volume.

It’s a pricey tool compared to other similar options, but we noticed how sturdy and high-quality it felt throughout our tests. If you’re looking for a hair dryer that you can also use to brush out your strands for a smooth look, this one has our stamp of approval.

What We Like

  • Has multiple heat settings

  • Large barrel is nice for long hair

  • Glides through hair easily

  • Leaves hair looking shiny

  • Affordable

What We Don't Like

  • Doesn’t have a cold shot to set hair

  • Could get a bit hotter

  • Doesn’t create a bouncy look

Hot air brushes with larger brush heads are ideal for those with long hair because long strands will easily wrap around the barrel all the way to the ends. Short hair likely won't wrap fully around the brush head, and therefore it will be harder to achieve flipped ends. And if you have long hair, then you know how time-consuming it can be to blow out your hair at home. When using a tool like this one that has a wider brush design, you’ll be able to shorten that process a bit without sacrificing beautiful results.

Though this tool has a pretty basic design which is in line with similar options like the One-Step Volumizer PLUS 2.0 Hair Dryer and Hot Air Brush and the L'ange Hair Le Volume 2-in-1 Titanium Brush Dryer, this one, in particular, impressed us in terms of how shiny it makes the hair look. We appreciate that it has three heat settings, but we do wish that it got a bit hotter on the highest setting and that it also featured a cold shot to set the style. While it doesn’t create the bounciest results (likely due to the fact that the brush is pretty large), it does an excellent job and smoothing and straightening the hair. If you have long hair and you’re looking to give yourself a quick blowout at home, this is a great option at an affordable price point.

Final Verdict

Our favorite hot air brush is the Dyson Airwrap Multi-Styler Complete Long. Though it’s definitely an investment, the variety of attachments it comes with, the thoughtful and ergonomic design, and how easy it is to use makes it the best option on the market for those looking to create a range of styles at home. But if you’re new to at-home styling or you’re looking for one simple tool to help you achieve a voluminous blowout, we recommend the L'ange Hair Le Volume 2-in-1 Titanium Brush Dryer.

How We Tested

In order to determine which hot air brushes are best, we researched the most popular and highly rated options before selecting many to test out in our lab facility with professional hairstylists as well as at home. Each tool was tested on several people with a variety of hair types and hair styling experiences. We created a standardized methodology and collected insights on each tool, rating each one based on how well it dried the hair, how it made the hair look, how easy it was to use, its design features, and its value. Those that ranked the highest across the board and impressed us the most appear on this list.

Meet the Expert

  • Zoya Ghamari is a hairstylist and owner of Zoya Salon in Dallas. She specializes in hair extensions, top hairpieces, and wigs. She caters to clients in both Texas and California.
  • Alex Brown is a celebrity hairstylist and the founder of Space by Alex Brown in Chicago. She’s worked with the likes of Kendall Jenner, Hailey Baldwin, and Bella Hadid, splitting her time between New York, LA, and her Chicago home base.

What to Look for in a Hot Air Brush

Bristle Type

According to Ghamari, you really want to pay attention to what kind of bristles a hot air brush has. Ceramic-coated bristles, for instance, do a great job of distributing heat so you don’t damage your hair. Meanwhile, boar and nylon bristles work to smooth and detangle strands. The Drybar Reserve 3-In-1 Interchangeable Blow-Dryer features nylon and tufted bristles.

Cord Length

Ghamari says to check out the cord length of a hot air brush too. A long cord will make the brush super easy to use, no matter where you are. (A cord length of 6 to 9 feet is best for ease of use.) It’s also wise to choose an option with a swivel cord, like the Dyson Airwrap Multi-Styler Complete Long, so that the tool and the cord move with you.

Temperature Control

Having the ability to control the temperature of a hot air brush is key, says Ghamari. That’s because being able to choose the temperature will prevent you from overheating your precious hair. Have fine or damaged hair? Simply set your hot air brush to the lowest temperature setting to avoid damaging your hair further.

Cool Shot

Ghamari also suggests looking for a hot air brush with cool shot functionality (like the one in our Best Overall pick, the Dyson Airwrap). Ending your drying and styling session with a cool shot may help lock your look in place and add shine.

FAQ

  • How do you use a hot air brush to curl hair?

Ghamari points out that using a hot air brush is very similar to using a round brush, except there’s no struggle to hold a blow-dryer in one hand and a round brush in the other. Brown, meanwhile, shares this tip for using a hot air brush to curl hair: “You can curl hair with a hot air brush by twisting the hair section out of the brush on the last pass through,” she says. “Adding a light hairspray to the section before twisting will also help the curl hold.” But if you’re looking for a more defined curl, we recommend going for the Dyson Airwrap Multi-Styler Complete Long or the Shark FlexStyle Air Drying & Styling System, which both come with curling barrels.

  • Do hot air brushes damage hair?

“Hot air brushes can only damage hair if they get too hot,” says Brown. She suggests reading reviews and doing your research on whatever brand you choose to buy. A hot air brush with temperature settings will help you control the heat so you don’t hurt your hair. And if your hot air brush has soft bristles, such as nylon and boar, this can help reduce any unnecessary tension. If you’re concerned about a brush getting too hot and damaging your hair, we recommend the L'ange Hair Le Volume 2-in-1 Titanium Brush Dryer because it doesn’t get as hot as the other options on our list.

  • How do you clean a hot air brush?

To clean a hot air brush, remove all of the shed hair using your fingers or tweezers after every few uses, says Brown. “Wiping it down with a hot towel will also help remove any excess product buildup,” she says.

How do I choose a hot air brush? ›

Is Revlon hot brush good? ›

The Revlon One-Step Volumizer Hot Air Brush isn't perfect, but it makes for a pretty great hair dryer alternative for a wide range of hair types. However, its bulky brush head, minimal heat settings, and limitations on styling different hair textures prevent it from being a universal, holy-grail product.

Do you use a hot brush on wet or dry hair? ›

Start with Towel-Dried Hair

Don't use a hot brush on dry hair, note our experts: If your strands are too dry, you might not get the desired shine or volume.

What size hot brush should I use? ›

The most basic rule of thumb is that the shorter your hair, the smaller the diameter of the brush you choose. On the other hand, the round brush with a smaller diameter will allow to add volume to the ends and curl the hair, while those with a larger diameter will give a soft blow-dry and a perfect straightening.

Is the Revlon hot air brush good for short hair? ›

New 30% smaller*** oval brush design to create volume at roots and beautifully curled ends, also suitable for mid to short hair. Designed to distribute air quickly and evenly to the hair to dry and style faster for less heat damage. Ionic technology for less frizz and shiny, healthy-looking hair.

What is the best hair brush to add volume to hair? ›

For fine hair, Taylor recommends a paddle or flat brush with boar bristles, since these types cause the least amount of stress to strands and better distribute hair's natural oils.

Which blower brush is the best? ›

Our favorite hot air brush is the Dyson Airwrap Multi-Styler Complete Long. Why are hot air brushes oval? ›

Designed to save time by styling damp or dry hair with one tool. The oval design allows hair to dry evenly while adding volume to the roots and ends in one brush stroke.

Is a hot air brush better than a curling iron? ›

Hot air brushes give hair volume, soft curls or waves. Hot air brushes are not intended for use on wet hair. Use one to finish styling your hair when it is 75% - 80% dry. A curling iron should only be used on dry hair and can produce tighter curl.

What hair brushes cause the least damage? ›

A great hair brush to avoid breakage, a boar bristle brush is gentle on all hair types. One benefit of a boar brush is that it distributes your scalp oils to the rest of your hair, which protects and hydrates damaged strands.

What hair brush won't make you lose a lot of hair? ›

Boar bristle brushes are popular because they won't tear or split your hair. They're also thought to increase blood flow to the hair follicles, which in turn stimulates growth. When it comes to size, go for a smaller brush that can work closer to the root to create more volume.

Do hot air brushes damage hair? ›

Are heated brushes bad for your hair? While any form of heat styling can damage your hair, heated brushes are one of the safest styling tools out there. Heated brushes create minimal damage because they use less direct heat than curling irons or hair straighteners.

Is the new Revlon hair dryer brush better than the original? ›

While I had zero complaints about how smooth my hair looked after using the original Revlon, I saw even smoother, shinier results with the new model. The smaller head makes it even easier for me to rotate the wand to create volume at my roots or create a curl at the ends.

What is the difference between the Revlon brushes? ›

Compared to the original model, the new Revlon brush has a slimmer handle, a smaller oval-shaped head, and an additional medium heat setting.

Why does my Revlon brush smell bad? ›

Blocked Lint Filter

If the burning smell persists, it could possibly mean the lint filter is blocked and needs to be cleaned. Check out the Lint Filter Replacement guide in order to properly clean the filter and potentially fix the burning smell.

Is a hot brush worth it? ›

There are a few benefits to hot air brushes over hair straighteners: the lower temperatures result in less hair damage, they make it easier to build volume and they add shine and they dry your hair at the same time as styling it.

Should you dry brush before or during shower? ›

When should I dry brush? The best time to dry brush is just before a shower. Then you can wash off any dead skin cells and flaky skin. Be sure to apply lotion afterward to put moisture back into your skin.

Can I use hot brush everyday? ›

While limiting your hair's exposure to heat is one of the best methods to protect it from harm, using a hair straightener brush on a regular basis is less hazardous than using a hair straightener because the heating element isn't in direct contact with the hair.

Are vented brushes better? ›

If you plan on creating some classic, Hollywood waves, a vented radial brush should be your top priority. Vented brushes let the heat from your blow dryer reach more of your hair, which cuts down on drying time and amps up the volume.

What do brush size numbers mean? ›

The number on the side of the paint brush refers to the thickness, length, or width of the bristles. Confusion arises because this number varies between manufacturers. A brush labeled with a "6" may look completely different than a "6" brush by a different manufacturer.

How many degrees is the Revlon hair dryer brush? ›

We recorded a maximum temperature range of 165°F to 175°F. Because our heat sensor is metal, the heat transfers faster and holds longer to it than it would to your hair, so your hair likely wouldn't actually heat up that high.
